MD5 vs SHA-256

Compare MD5 and SHA-256 on the same input. Learn why SHA-256 replaced MD5 for checksums and signatures.

MD5 vs SHA-256

Both functions hash the same bytes, but they are not interchangeable. MD5 is 128 bits and broken for collisions. SHA-256 is 256 bits and the current default for checksums and HMAC.

Worked example: The same string, both algorithms

Input

hello

MD5

MD5: 5d41402abc4b2a76b9719d911017c592
SHA-256: 2cf24dba5fb0a30e26e83b2ac5b9e29e1b161e5c1fa7425e73043362938b9824

Practical tip

Use MD5 only when a legacy protocol demands it. For new work, publish SHA-256.

How to use this MD5 Generator

  1. 1Use the live tool above — it runs entirely in your browser and never uploads your data.
  2. 2Paste the sample from the worked example, or use your own input.
  3. 3Copy the result, then adapt the same steps in your editor, script, or pipeline.

MD5 vs SHA-256 FAQs

Can I convert MD5 to SHA-256?

No. They are different functions. You must hash the original data again.

Is MD5 faster?

Yes, but the difference is irrelevant for typical files and dangerous if you chose MD5 for speed on passwords.
