MD5 Hash Length
An MD5 hash is always 32 hexadecimal characters (128 bits), regardless of input size. Confirm it with the generator.

MD5 Hash Length
Hash functions produce a fixed-size digest. MD5 is 128 bits, printed as 32 hex digits, whether you hash one byte or a gigabyte. If you see another length, you are not looking at a raw hex MD5.
Worked example: Short and longer inputs, same length
Inputs
hello → 5d41402abc4b2a76b9719d911017c592 (32 chars) hello world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! → a41192429ac75d6c9a99627cbb859f61 (32 chars)
Lengths
Both digests are 32 characters
Practical tip
Base64 MD5 is 24 characters including padding. If a system stores 24 chars, it is probably Base64, not hex.
How to use this MD5 Generator
- 1Use the live tool above — it runs entirely in your browser and never uploads your data.
- 2Paste the sample from the worked example, or use your own input.
- 3Copy the result, then adapt the same steps in your editor, script, or pipeline.
MD5 Hash Length FAQs
Is MD5 ever shorter?
Only if someone truncates it. Truncated MD5 is a different (weaker) function — do not do this.
What about binary MD5?
The raw digest is 16 bytes. Hex doubles that to 32 characters; Base64 encodes those 16 bytes as 24 characters.
