MD5 Checksum of a File
Calculate the MD5 checksum of a local file without uploading it. Compare the digest with a published MD5.
Part of the free MD5 Hash Generator. Runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
MD5 Checksum of a File
md5sum is still the checksum you will see next to many ISO and zip downloads. Hash the file in your browser and compare the 32-character digest with the published value.
Worked example: MD5 of the bytes of "hello"
File bytes (text stand-in)
hello
md5sum
5d41402abc4b2a76b9719d911017c592
Practical tip
A one-byte change flips the digest. If you edited the archive after downloading, the checksum will not match the vendor’s.
How to use this MD5 Generator
- 1Use the live tool above — it runs entirely in your browser and never uploads your data.
- 2Paste the sample from the worked example, or use your own input.
- 3Copy the result, then adapt the same steps in your editor, script, or pipeline.
MD5 Checksum of a File FAQs
Is the file uploaded?
No. The file is read locally and hashed with SparkMD5 / Web Crypto in your tab.
Does this match md5sum on Linux?
Yes, for the same bytes. Windows Notepad line endings (CRLF) will produce a different digest than a Unix file.
