SHA-512 Hash Generator

SHA-512 is a 512-bit member of the SHA-2 family. The digest is 128 hex characters. Use it when you want a longer checksum than SHA-256, or when a spec calls for SHA-512 explicitly.

Worked example: SHA-512 of a short string

Input

hello

Practical tip

SHA-512 can be faster than SHA-256 on 64-bit CPUs. For most APIs, SHA-256 remains the default because the extra length is rarely needed.

How to use this Hash Generator

  1. 1Use the live tool above — it runs entirely in your browser and never uploads your data.
  2. 2Paste the sample from the worked example, or use your own input.
  3. 3Copy the result, then adapt the same steps in your editor, script, or pipeline.

SHA-512 Hash Generator FAQs

How long is a SHA-512 hash?

512 bits, 128 hexadecimal characters.

Is SHA-512 more secure than SHA-256?

Both are strong. SHA-512 has a larger digest, which matters more for HMAC key strength and collision resistance at extreme scale than for everyday checksums.
