Checksum Generator for Downloads

Generate a SHA-256 or MD5 checksum to publish next to a download. Hash the release file locally and copy the digest.

Part of the free Hash Generator. Runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

Checksum Generator for Downloads

When you ship a binary, publish its SHA-256 next to the link. Users can hash their copy and see that it matches. Generate the digest from the same file you uploaded.

Worked example: A published checksum line

Release note

SHA256 (hello.txt) = 2cf24dba5fb0a30e26e83b2ac5b9e29e1b161e5c1fa7425e73043362938b9824

Digest to publish

2cf24dba5fb0a30e26e83b2ac5b9e29e1b161e5c1fa7425e73043362938b9824

Practical tip

Publish SHA-256. Offer MD5 only if an older pipeline still requires it, and label it as a corruption check, not a security check.

How to use this Hash Generator

  1. 1Use the live tool above — it runs entirely in your browser and never uploads your data.
  2. 2Paste the sample from the worked example, or use your own input.
  3. 3Copy the result, then adapt the same steps in your editor, script, or pipeline.

Checksum Generator for Downloads FAQs

Where should I put the checksum?

On the download page, in the GitHub release notes, or in a SHA256SUMS file in the same directory.

Should I sign the checksums?

Yes for software people install. A GPG-signed SHA256SUMS file stops an attacker who can change both the binary and the hash on the page.
