SHA-1 Hash Generator

SHA-1 produces a 160-bit digest written as 40 hex characters. It is still used to identify Git commits and older checksums, but it is not safe for signatures or passwords.

Worked example: SHA-1 of a short string

Input

hello

Hash

Practical tip

Prefer SHA-256 for new checksums. Git still uses SHA-1 (and is migrating to SHA-256) for historical reasons, not because SHA-1 is a good modern choice.
